Incoming Student Registration Requirements
You must register according to the following:
- Incoming full-time students must register for 9 credits (3 classes).
- All students on F-1 or J-1 visas must register for 9 credits (3 classes).
- It is not possible for incoming students to register for more than 9 credits.
- Part-time students may register for fewer credits, but must register for DSAN 5000 and DSAN 5100.
- All incoming students (full-time or part-time) must register for DSAN 5000 and DSAN 5100.
- Students in the accelerated program should register for DSAN 5000 (preferably) or DSAN 5100 . If you choose (with your advising dean’s approval) to take a second DSAN class this Fall, your second class should be DSAN 5100 (or DSAN 5000).
- PLAN AHEAD. Plan now. CAREFULLY decide on your classes. Then register for 3 classes. We always do our best to get students into all the classes they wish. Some classes have multiple sections and you may need to attend your second choice. If a section fills, try for an alternative section. Classes do fill, but we also offer many electives each term.
Please note:
- You may choose to waitlist a class. However, in most cases, you will not get the class. Please register as soon as you can and for 3 classes that match your requirements and interests.
- All new students MUST register for DSAN 5000 and DSAN 5100. You may choose one elective (see the list below). New students may not take non-DSAN electives. New students may NOT take 4 classes for any reason.
- September 5th is the LAST DAY of the add/drop period. This is the last day to drop without the grade of “W” Don’t wait until this date! Register fast and effectively and well before the deadline. It may be impossible to get signatures or approval as we approach the last days. If you have a special case, make your request early.
- International students – It is critical that you are registered for 3 classes. Students on an F-1 or J-1 visa must be registered full-time.
Frequently Asked Registration Questions
- I’m registered for two classes and am waitlisted for a third. Is this OK?
No. Being waitlisted is not the same as being registered. Please register for THREE classes and waitlist the fourth class. If you get into the waitlisted class, drop one of your other classes ASAP.
- I want to take a class in another department.
Not yet. New students can only take DSAN classes. Please choose from one of our excellent DSAN electives. The list is below.
- I am registered for three classes but there’s another class I really want to take. The professor told me they don’t know if there will be seats available. What should I do?
Keep your registration in the three classes you already have. On the first day that the class you want meets, attend the class (with the professor’s permission) and ask about getting in. You can ask the professor to sign an Add/Drop form, or you can get their permission via email after the class. Then be sure to go into MyAccess and drop one of your other classes.
- I am not sure which classes I want to take and I’d like to try out a few and then decide during the Add/Drop period. Is this OK?
No. Our program does not permit this. You should be fully and correctly registered before classes start on August 27th. If you are not sure about a class, please email us.
How To Add/Drop
- First, try to avoid any add/drop. Add/drop is for special cases and should not be used as a method for indecision.
- During registration, you can use MyAccess to add and remove classes.
- Please plan ahead. Never wait until the last few days to make changes, etc.

Core Course DSAN 5000 & DSAN 5100 Registration
DSAN 5000 and DSAN 5100 are core courses that are required for all new students.
